America’s dark history with residential schools is examined as First Lady, Michelle Obama, is set to speak at historic Indian Boarding School. Like many boarding schools, the Santa Fe Indian School was a center for forced assimilation instead of education. Today the school operates completely differently: it is operated by the 19 Pueblo Governors of the state and helps students maintain a connection to their heritage while thriving academically.
